Our Community Health program offers a General Health and Nutrition Education curriculum over a 4- week course that encourages the adoption of healthy behaviors. These classes are often delivered throughout the community at schools, churches, community centers, local clinics, as well as through other nonprofits and former clients. The goal of this program is to prevent or delay the complications of obesity and related illnesses (diabetes, heart disease, and stroke), and to help our clients choose a more active lifestyle and a healthier diet. Our Community Health team is trained to perform screenings for glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, BMI, weight, and waist circumference. In some cases, individuals develop diabetes at least 10 years before the actual diagnosis is given. These free screenings alert them to potential problems that should be discussed further with a medical professional
Our Community Health team gives free health screenings on Tuesday afternoons from 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the YMCA – Garland and Thursday mornings from 8:30 am – 1:00 pm at YMCA – White Rock.
They also offer a nutrition class at the YMCA – Garland location at 6:00 pm on Tuesdays.
